Terms Explained

Bauergüter are long-established, legally defined farm holdings integrated into the traditional village tenure system, whereas Colonien are later, state-created settlement holdings carved out of forest or waste land and governed initially by special founding contracts rather than long-standing custom.

  • Colon = legally defined settler of a state-founded Colonie

  • Bauer = holder of a traditional Bauerngut, identified by role rather than title. Bauer is often implicit.
