Document 1: Petition submitted by the tailor Krückeberg in Evesen

Overview

This is Schneider Krückeberg’s petition to purchase a tenancy holding on land where he can build a future home that was presented to the Rentkammer on 30 September 1808.

The Rentkammer’s response is written just below the petition’s salutation.

Hans Heinrich Wilharm was one of Carl Friedrich (born 1807) Baptismal Sponsors

We know that when Carl Friedrich Krückeberg was born in 1807, one of his baptismal sponsors was Hans Heinrich Wilharm of no. 11 Evesen.

Hans Heinrich Wilharm was born in Berenbusch in 1760, and in 1796 he married Anne Marie Philippine Blecke of no. 11 Evesen. She died after giving birth to their son Hans Heinrich Wilharm], who was born 11 April 1797 at no. 11 Evesen. Later the same year, her husband remarried to Sophie Ernestine Blecke, who had been living with them already.

The birth records of their daughter Anne Marie Christine, born in 1798, and their son Carl Heinrich, born in 1810, show the family:

continued to live a no. 11 Evesen
Hans Heinrich was the Colon (Stätte holder) of no. 11 Evesen
He worked as an Ackermann (farmer) in 1810.

Response

The Rentkammer asked the Bückeburg Amt (administrative office) to report on the " financial circumstances and on the personal qualities of the petitioner."

Petition cover pages typically identify individuals by occupation and place of association, which may reflect where they worked, were registered, or were administratively known, and does not always prove their legal residence. The label “des Schneiders Krückeberg in Evesen” therefore indicates that Krückeberg was known as a tailor in Evesen but does not by itself establish domicile there. Consistent church records identifying Krückeberg as resident at Berenbusch No. 10 carry greater evidentiary weight for determining residence.

Ich habe bisher als Einlieger beÿ Wilharm No 11 in Evesen gewohnt, wünscht
aber jetzt mich selbst anzubauen. Vor Bärenbusch liegt ein Platz, der vorher
schon von Forstamtswegen besichtiget worden, beÿ Gelegenheit daß ein Anderer
sich da anzubauen wünschte, welcher aber den Platz nicht bezahlen konnte.

Dieser Platz nun ist zwar zum Haus-Bau sehr unbequem, indem lauter Grunde
darauf sind, deren Ausfüllung und Ebenung viele Mühe erfordern wird. Allein er
ist mir deswegen gelegen, weil er nicht zu weit von Lauten entfernt ist,
worauf ich wegen meiner Schneider Profession besonders Bedacht nehmen muß.

Indem ich nun die Hoffnung seye, dass Euer Durchlaucht in Betracht der vielen
Mühe, welche die Ebenung dieses Platzes erfordern wird, den Preis desselben
nicht zu hoch ansetzen werden, so ergeht an Ew. Durchlauchten meine
unterthänigste Bitte:

mir jenen Platz zum Hausbau gnädigst gegen ein Billiges zu überlassen.

To the District Office, by brief referral, for a report
on the financial circumstances and on the personal qualities
of the petitioner. 2 Oct. 1808.

Up to now I have lived as an Einlieger (lodger) with Wilharm No. 11 in
Evesen, but I now wish to establish myself independently.  In front of
Bärenbusch there lies a plot of land which had previously already been
inspected by the Forestry Office, on the occasion that another person
wished to build there, but who was unable to pay for the plot.

This plot, however, is indeed very inconvenient for house construction,
since it consists entirely of uneven ground, the filling and leveling of
which will require much effort. Nevertheless, it is suitable for me for the
reason that it is not too far removed from people, a circumstance to which
I must pay particular attention on account of my profession as a tailor.

Since I now hope that Your Serene Highness, in consideration of the great
effort which the leveling of this place will require, will not set the
price of it too high, there thus proceeds to Your Serene Highness my most
humble petition:

that that place be graciously granted to me for house construction at a
reasonable price.
