Docket Item 3: Memorandum of Senior Government Councillor von Reck (15 November 1841)

Summary

On 15 November 1841, the Privy Chamber Councillor Reck prepared a formal valuation of Krückeberg’s holding and buildings. After deducting debts, he calculated a net worth of 825 Reichsthaler, but judged it doubtful whether a further 200 rt loan would be secure. Although acknowledging loans had been made in worse cases, he recommended against approval, and the Gesuch (the petition for a loan by Johann Heinrich Krückeberg was marked to be refused.

The same-day note at the bottom, written in a different hand and introduced with the abbreviation "KC." for Kammer Collegium, shows that the Rentcammer’s board itself acted on the clerk’s opinion and formally resolved: “the petition is to be rejected.” In short: the numbers didn’t convince the authorities that a rescue loan was secure, and the risk of a forced sale remaimed imminent.

"holding" and "vot." Explained

"holding" is translated from "Stelle" (and elsewhere "Stätte"). It refers to the "leasehold holding of a numbered Colon (tenant holder), comprising land and buildings."

Obgleich nicht zu leugnen, daß schon Darlehen unter noch misslicheren Verhältnissen bewilligt worden sind, so mag ich ein solches doch nicht be[für- worten] und kaum daher die Bewilligung oder Verweigerung lediglich dem Ermessen der Cammer anheimgeben.
